Challenging Norms of Breastfeeding

In the state of Kerala in India, a cover of a magazine created a stir among the country. On the cover of the magazine Grihalakshmi “features a 27-year-old model Gilu Joseph dressed in a gray blouse, cradling a baby at her breast while she stares squarely at the camera”. The cover is also captioned “Don’t stare - we are breastfeeding”. This cover, published as a part of an early celebration and campaign for International Women’s Day, has received both applause and outrage. India, having a very patriarchal dominant society, still faces cultural challenges for breastfeeding in public, however, this cover also received praise from many celebrities and organizations such as UNICEF also making the point that neonatal deaths decrease up to 22% if the baby is fed within the first hour of birth.

In the 1960s, a “space treasure map” was created to identify anomalies in the Caribbean that is most likely due to shipwrecks as a part of a project called “The Bahamas Project”. In the 1940s in the small town of Crystal City in South Texas, there are remains of one of the biggest internment camps that incarcerated those with Japanese and German ancestry. Today, those who were incarcerated speak and share their views on the current border crisis. “From the time I was born until I was almost five, all I had known was incarceration” one of the incarcerates say. They share that it’s difficult to just comprehend what’s going on today because it reminds them so much of what happened to them, from being separated from their families, living in harsh conditions, to oppressed on racist terms.

Fake News More Than Frustrating

Fake news in in India is causing more than just annoyance and frustrations, it is causing uneasy communities and panic. WhatsApp, a social media app, has caused extreme nervousness in India claiming child kidnappers and spree murders. These anxious parents are not remaining passive, they have claimed the lives of at least 6 people, possible more. The scared guardians turn into panicked mobs, turning to violence when they see anyone in their vicinity that they don’t recognize. Police Captain warns civilians not to “take action into their own hands” when they see strangers near their home. Fake News is a phrase commonly associated with the current President of the United States, Donald Trump. It’s no secret that there is high tension between majority of the mainstream media and the current administration. He uses his platform on Twitter and elsewhere to call out many liberal media networks and label their reporting as “fake news.” In fact, Trump announced on Twitter early January about the “Fake News Awards.” Many “winners” of the awards were people that reported on whether the Trump campaign worked alongside the Russians to win the 2016 election. In Trump’s eyes, “he has labeled the press the ‘enemy of the American people.’”

This rumor was first published on a conservative web and spread through social media like wild in the past days coming. This false news comes to light as present day President Donald trump faced harsh criticism towards his “zero tolerance”   policy on immigration.  Since may over 2300 children have been separated from there families. It should also be noted that the president has signed a executive order stop  this policy sinceFactcheck facing backlash.
