Almost everyone in the United States has heard that the fake news, which caused a frenzy of outrage, was implemented by Russia as a way to help get Donald Trump into office. But where did most if this fake news really originate? Apparently Macedonian teenagers are behind a good portion of fake news that was circulated, and for reasons much less malicious than what many believe. In the city of Velles, Macedonia where the average wage is $4,800 and unemployment is high, these teenagers were simply trying to make a 'quick buck'. A Macedonian news agency, which contacted the teens, stated that "none of those contacted are members of any political party, domestic or foreign" (Source). It is interesting to me that none of the news agencies in the US have mentioned these reports which claim that the fake news amounts to nothing more than financial gain due to advertisement revenue based on web-traffic.[2 Images, 1 Link, 1 Quote, 153 Words]
