The Extreme Side of Covering Extremism

Journalism is becoming what seems to be an extreme sport as young reporters are throwing themselves into life threatening conditions to cover the upcoming stories of extremism in America. Tensions between the far right and anti-fascists are heating up as more riots and protests are breaking out across major cities. Kelly Kenoyer is a journalist for 'The Portland Mercury' and was covering a story about a violent street protest in downtown. Shortly after she had arrived, 'The Guardian' reports that, "she was being shoved and manhandled by a masked man aligned with the rightwing Patriot Prayer group." The right wingers see the press as a threat and apparently, are not afraid to show that they mean business. After being shoved and given vulgar hand gestures by protesters, Kelly dodged harm once again when she was almost hit by flying stones and bottles being thrown back and forth by protesters and anti-fascists. However, Kelly seems to be one of the lucky few compared to other journalists, who were seen being pepper sprayed and had tears rolling down their face. Journalists are no longer seen as neutral in these situations as they once were. [1 image, 1 link, 1 quote, 192 words]
