With the introduction of self-serve kiosks into McDonald's restaurants, many have assumed that the company is attempting to replace its workers, specifically cashiers, with robots. This has led to a widespread rumor that the food chain is mechanizing its workforce in an attempt to avoid a proposed raised minimum wage. The website Snopes has released an article disproving this rumor and establishing the true reason behind the introduction of the kiosks. The site states that the rumor originated from a fake news site, called Neon Needle, and has spread through various social media sites. According to Snopes, "Although self-order kiosks may reduce the need for cashiers, they don’t completely eliminate it. The kiosks supplement cashiers by operating in tandem with them and allowing customers choose either ordering method." The article also argues that the introduction of kiosks should not be associated with mechanization, as they act as self-serving stations and only comprise of a touch-screen order panel. As stated by McDonald's, the kiosks are already in use across the world and are only being introduced to modernize their American restaurants.
