Gambian Journalist Attacked

Journalist Pa Modou Bojang was arrested then beaten on June 18, 2018 in the village of Faraba Banta, Kombo East. Bojang was apparently just covering a story on sand mining by a private company in the village when members of the Police Intervention Unit appeared. The leaders of the companies that Bojang represents are," demand[ing] a full investigation"(Source). Pa Modou Bojang is a well-known radio producer and journalist and has quite a large following. It is unclear at this time whether Bojang was breaking any laws when he was arrested or if his being 'famous' had anything to do with his treatment. I noted that when visiting the Gambian government's website that the news section is entirely about the president and his accomplishments, clearly an indicator of the type of government Gambia has.
