Fake news distorts election process in Turkey

"With just days to go until Turks head to the polls for presidential and parliamentary elections, millions of voters are once again being bombarded with a deluge of fake news reports which could sway the biggest election in nearly a century," Al Jazeera reported yesterday.  Most of the fake news stories are believed to be disseminated through Facebook, and some suspect that the culprits may actually be getting paid to do so.  Al Jazeera reports that 89% of people in Turkey use social media as a main source for news.  It goes on to state that Turkey filed more requests last year to block Twitter content than any other country in the world.  The situation in Turkey is a great example of how social media smear campaigns undermine journalism at its core.  [1 image, 1 link, 1 quote, 132 words]
