During President Trump's state of the union, senator Gutiérrez, a Democrat, was caught leaving the speech prematurely. The media immediately began reporting on the story before collecting any evidence. The news accused the senator of storming out of the speech in anger after the rest of the room began to chant patriotically. The rumor spread quickly as multiple media sources assumed the senator's motivations. The news site Snopes reported on the story to clear up misconceptions on the issue. The Snopes article states that the senator "exited the chamber in order to make it to a television interview on time. Gutiérrez left as Trump was coming to the conclusion of what had been an historically long State of the Union address." Despite a lack of evidence, many Republican news sites, including Fox News and Infowars, were quick to attack the Democrat senator for his early exit.
