The Predicament around Cobalt

Cobalt: the 27th element, within almost all modern electronics, and mined unethically. It is a controversial issue around how cobalt is attained in modern day with most of the world’s supply coming from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The issues arise with children mining this element in dangerous conditions and then being sold off to Chinese foundries. Initiatives have popped up such as the “Global Battery Alliance dedicated to ensuring an ethical and sustainable global supply chain for lithium-ion battery production” (Danigelis). Cobalt is key in producing lithium ion batteries which is in most electronics and it is even dangerous covering this issue. Companies are stepping up to tackle this issue and it will be a long and difficult path to ensure that cobalt can mined in an environmentally friendly and ethical way.
