Africa is now being seen as an untapped source of talent and innovation in technology. Companies such as Google and Facebook have become very invested in these areas, funding the creation of tech hubs where people can collaborate and find like-minded people to aid them on their journey. The problem is, simply creating tech hubs is not enough. Lack of specialization and the lack of a connection to universities remains a problem. While being jacks of all trades, this in a sense can stifle innovation. It doesn’t provide enough resources for people to find specific areas that best utilize their talents. In addition, not a lot of the tech hubs do not have “close links to academic centers of innovation,” (Adegoke) and this is a problem as universities can serve as sources of talent that can aid the growth of these areas. There is a great way to go but the future looks bright for Africa.
