The Power of 'Fake News' Is Not New Knowledge

The recent storm in politics regarding the uproar over fake news has caused many to blame the social media websites that helped circulate these stories, stories that many believe swayed the election in favor of Donald Trump. However, fake news on the internet, and the knowledge of its influential power, is nothing new. Almost everyone has heard the statement that the average person swallows 4 or more spiders while in their sleep. This is every bit as terrifying as it is false, nothing more than an urban myth. This myth was seriously created over a decade ago as, "an example of the absurd things people will believe simply because they come across them on the Internet." (Snopes) Spiders truly are more afraid of you than you are of it and, "many people would likely be awakened by the sensation of a spider crawling over their faces and into their mouths" (Scientific American).
