Many people abide by what is known as the “five-second rule” when a piece of food is dropped on the floor. In fact, “79 per cent admitted to eating food that had fallen on the floor”. Germ scientists say that within five seconds of the food touching the floor, no harmful bacteria can infect it. It is acknowledged that germs do transfer from the floor to the food, but not in a harmful or dangerous way. The longer food stays on the floor has an “impact on the number [of germs] that can transfer”. 5 seconds has been proven to be the magical number that germs can transfer to food before it becomes harmful to the human body.
