The Consequences of False Information

Demonstrators stage a silent protest on in Guwahati, India, on Monday demanding punishment for those behind the killing of two men in the Karbi Anglong district of Assam.
It’s truly alarming to hear how fast false information can spread. It is even worse when two men are wrongfully acquitted for a crime they never committed, and killed. In the district of Karbi Anglong in the state of Assam, India, two men by the names of Abhijit Nath and Kuldhar Saika were killed after a mob of around 27 people had attacked them. Rumors had been spreading around the city that there were “child kidnappers...operating in the mainly rural area”. The two men had visited the area a couple times and the people assumed their “car [was] being used to kidnap children”. The false information spread and when their car was spotted again, the people attacked and wrongfully killed them. There are protests happening in the state against the atrocity and to stop the spread of false rumors. [1 image, 1 link, 2 quotations. 140 words]
