Suing for Justice

In October 2014, amidst the national debate over police use of lethal force, 17-year-old Laquan Mcdonald was shot over 15 times including multiple times in the back. This happened in Chicago which is one of the nations leaders in gun-related violence. The police department subsequently refused to release the dash-cam video stating that, "it could taint ongoing Illinois state and federal investigations of the officer" (Source). It is only when the department was sued by freelance journalist Brandon Smith, which a judge ruled on, that the police department is being required to release the video. It does not make any sense that of the most important pieces of evidence would be allowed to withheld.
