Selfies Document A Parasite

Today woman all over the world take selfies to post on their social media for others to view but just recently a 32-year-old woman was requested by her Doctor to do so for very different reasons.  Michael Nedelman from CNN reported on this bizarre story, sharing that the “women documented a lump under her skin for weeks before doctors were able to remove it -- and it didn't stay in one place.” (Nedelman).  Dr. Vladimir Kartashev was able to finally remove the bulge as it appeared. The woman had, Dirofilaria repens, a parasitic worm that was living in her face.  The woman contracted the parasite in Moscow.  “The parasitic worm is normally found in dogs and other carnivores, entering the body as a larva through a mosquito bite.” (Nedelman). Although it seems that more people seem to be contracting the parasite today, Dr. Kartashev states, “I think it is important not to scare people. This is still a very rare condition.” (Nedelman).
