Cable
internet is not a luxury that is able to reach a large portion of the
population of Nigeria however, another form of internet is reaching the masses.
Smartphones have proliferated within the country and it ranked 4th in the world among countries with the highest net mobile subscriptions. The barriers
of entry to the Internet have dropped as mobile devices have become more
affordable. As local broadband is not available everywhere, “mobile broadband
would complement fixed broadband in some segments and would be the dominant
mode of access in others.” All of this is based on data from Ericsson, a
telecommunications company dominant in Nigeria. With
the proliferation of smartphones will follow an influx of information, vital
for keeping its citizens updated with the world.
