Malaysia's Parliament Passes Anti-fake News Legislation

Though contested by opposition claiming that the Barisan Nasional coalition is using the new law to suppress opinions they do not agree with, Malaysian Parliament passes anti-fake news legislation. The new law is response to the ineffectiveness of 1984 legislation that has not curtailed the publishing of fake news. According to The Strait Times, “Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, Malaysia's de facto law minister overseeing the Bill's path into legislation, has said the law is not intended to restrict freedom of speech but to restrict the dissemination of fake news”. The law was not only fast tracked, but it comes during the current election. [1 image, 1 link, 1 quotation, 104 words]
