The World Cup is a highly anticipated event that millions gather to
watch, and those gatherings usually involve food, friends, and alcohol. The matches
are hosted in Russia this year, but recently there as a ban placed that stated “the
sale and consumption of alcohol will be banned” at certain locations the day
before and the day of each match. However, the Moscow Times reports that “the
ban has not been very effective.” Journalist Evan Gershkovich visited Moscow during
a match day to see if he could bypass the law like many citizens have done
easily. He discovered that some of law enforcement had different understandings
of what the law actually says; therefore, many officers did not do much to stop
bars from serving people alcohol after all. Overall, Gershkovich got to have a beer and
watched alcohol “bring people together.”
