How Is This Rare Lobster Blue?

A Canadian lobsterman found this rare blue lobster last November. This rare lobster is only found in about every four to five years, says National Geographic . The color of this lobster comes from astaxanthin which is an antioxidant which is what gives it its pigment. The pigment is known to change colors. This antioxidant gives lobster the red, blue and yellows which all blend together and give it a brownish color. This pictured lobster in specifically has low levels of this pigment which is why it is given its blue color. However, researchers do not know why it is low in pigment. They believe it may be due to a genetic mutation or a low-pigment diet. Researcher, Tlusty, says, “A lot of animals eat this and incorporate this color into their pigmentation”.
