Fake Tweets Become Popular News

Jason Michael received a lot of attention on social media when he tweeted, “Believe it or not, this is a shark on the freeway in Houston, Texas. #Hurricane Harvy” (Michael).  In August of 2017, Hurricane Harvey devastated Houston, leaving excessive damage from the flood waters of the severe storm.  This tweet had 144.785 likes and 85,476 retweets, but even with its popularity, this was just fake news.  The Indian Express cleared up the confusion by stating that Michael, “later clarified that he knew it was fake and that’s why he had shared it with a misspelled Harvey (#HurricaneHarvy in his tweet).” (The Indian Express).
