Fake Statistics Surrounding Hurricane Harvey

Related image
As Hurricane Harvey spread devastation in 2017, many news articles distributed false and attention-grabbing information about the event. The website IJR summarized the situation well by stating, "In the mad scramble for information about the crisis and the uncertain circumstances, a fertile ground [was] prepared for wildly exaggerated claims." One example of these claims was a fake news article made by the social media site called The Cajun Navy, which claimed that only 60 of the 1,566 churches in Houston, Texas accepted Hurricane Harvey victims. The fake statistics gained significant traction as anti-Christian news sites spread the rumor. The statistics given by The Cajun Navy are unsubstatntiated as they are not based on any evidence.
