According to the site NYMag, a fake news story spread quickly across social media near the end of the year 2017. The story was made in response to a protest at Columbia University against Mike Cernovich, a far-right news figure. NYMag states that, during the protest, "someone handed some Columbia Universities protesters a banner and asked them to unfurl it." Unbeknownst to the protesters, the banner advocated in defense of pedophiles. Before the protesters had developed an understanding of the banner they were holding, a picture was taken. To clarify the situation, a man named Jake Offenhartz uploaded the picture online and stated that the banner had been planted. In response, far-right supporters took the image and spread it across social media without mentioning that the banner was planted.
