Distinguishing Satire from Fake News

The Onion is a satire online news source that originally started as a newspaper. For years the platform provided laughs to many users who would share these articles to their friends as pranks or as a fun pastime; however, as the fake news crusade has gotten more popular many people have trouble distinguishing satire from fake news when they consume media online. Marine Shure says The Onion aims to “train [their] readers on [their] brand of satire rather than trick them.” While many who are unfamiliar with The Onion and similar websites try to claim these websites are just as bad as fake news sources, Shure insists that “[their] intentions are entirely divergent from what you see with a lot of fake news.” Most of their supporters understand their content is for entertainment and lighthearted political implications about our society.
