Eyeo is making a browser extension
that will help people distinguish what news sources are filled with fake news
and which ones are actually trustworthy. TechCrunch says the extension TrustedNews
will be a part of Adblock Plus and will also include options to detect clickbait
titles, malicious ads, and blogs that are meant as satire. The director of ecosystems at Eyeo says they are “testing
the waters at this stage — to see whether the approach will be something web
users find useful” (TechCrunch). While it is still in its early stages, the hope
is that people can comment on the trustworthiness ratings if they think they
aren’t correct, but due to our own personal biases, user feedback could make their
efforts more difficult.
