Gun control has been a hot-button issue in recent
years. Some say that guns need to be
taken away while others say that the laws already in place need to be enforced
better. A recent New York Times article shows that the laws currently in place are not being enforced by the ATF and
illegal gun dealers are not being prosecuted. The problem lies in “senior
officials at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives… routinely
[overruling] inspectors’ recommendations that gun dealers lose their licenses
for making illegal sales (Watkins).” These officials “[allow] gun dealers who fail
inspections to keep their licenses even after they were previously warned to
follow the rules, according to interviews with more than half a dozen current
and former law enforcement officials and a review of more than 100 inspection
reports (Watkins).”
