A City Cashes in on Fake News

During the 2016 election, coverage on ‘fake news’ increased. So how did fake news gain attention? In Veles, a small city in Macedonia, many teenagers were publishing sectionalists stories to Facebook in exchange for cash. One student shares his experience: “After copying and pasting various articles, he packaged them under a catchy new headline, paid Facebook to share it with a target US audience hungry for Trump news and then when those Americans clicked on his stories and began to like and share them, he began earning revenue from advertising on the site.” When asked if youngsters care how their fake news affect American voters, the answer was simple. They did not care about the outcome. For them, it was an easy way to make money to spend on expensive items and alcohol. The trend amongst school children to make bucks by selling lies raised concerns amongst residents of the town. One woman worries for” young people's morality in Veles.”
