Japan has the second longest work hours in the world (the longest is Mexico). There exists the idea that the work you do only half your career, the other half is dedication to the company. This idea has been eroded over time but it still is very prevalent in Japanese work culture. A 64 year old man took lunch three minutes earlier multiple times over the course of a few months. He ended up being fined for doing so and the government office we works for issued a public apology. The reason for this is due to a, public service law requiring officials to “concentrate on their jobs”, according to the bureau."
