Tangier, The Sinking Island In The Chesapeake

Journalist Carolyn Kormann covered a story about a tiny sinking island called Tangier, located in Virginia. I have never heard of this small island nor did I know about its fate but I find this topic to be very intriguing. The mayor of this small island, James Eskridge, is sixty years old but it appears he may actually out live this sinking island. Two thirds of the land has been lost since 1850 partly caused by something known as a glacial rebound which causes the island to sink at a somewhat fast pace of a millimeter or two every year. The most serious problems that are causing the island to sink though are storm erosions and sea level rise, which are increasing as climate change continues to grow. “Without climate change, the island would have remained above water for perhaps another century; now the cutoff date is only a few decades away, if not sooner” Kormann stated. It is important that people know about the state this island is in because it showcases what climate change is doing to our planet.
