The European Union is set to adopt stricter rules regarding internet copyright rules which could result in a ban on memes. Article This possible legislation would place a great responsibility on social media companies like Twitter and Facebook to prevent the uploading of copyrighted material. While much opposition is focused on the meme ban, "Article 13 would affect any form of copyrighted material for internet users in the European Union." Meaning that any material that is protected under copyright would be taken down, turning the internet into a “Tool for the automated surveillance and control of its users.”
