Jairo Sousa, a Brazilian journalist, was killed June 22,
2018, in Rio de Janeiro. Two people shot him when the back when he was arriving
to Rádio Pérola, where he worked. He was 43 years old and was known for
reporting about drug trafficking and homicide. His most recent report, however,
was on the municipal government. An article from https://cpj.org/
mentioned that CPJ Central and South America Program Coordinator, named Natalie
Southwick, said, “The killing of Jairo Sousa is a reminder that journalists
working outside Brazil's major urban areas face the highest risk in the country.”
Sousa sometimes wore a bulletproof vest and carried pepper spray, aware of the
reactions people had, but it is unknown if his murder is related to his work.
