Disney buying up
other entertainment companies is nothing new. Competition in their quest to
monopolize entertainment is rare because they are such a powerful company. New
York Times writers Edmond Lee and Brooks Barnes cover a blue moon occasion
where Disney was one-upped by TV conglomerate Comcast in their article Comcast Offers $65 Billion For 21st
Century Fox, Challenging Disney (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/13/business/media/comcast-fox-disney-bidding-war.html).
Comcast “announced an offer worth $65 billion for the bulk of 21st Century
Fox’s businesses on Wednesday, setting up a showdown with the Walt Disney
Company for Rupert Murdoch’s media empire (Lee, Barnes).” This offer is all
cash as opposed to Disney’s $52.4 bid in stocks. This isn’t the first time
Comcast and Disney have butted heads, “the rancor stretches back to at least
2004, when Comcast tried to swallow Disney (Lee, Barnes).”
