Caught Up
A California man was tracked down for creating fake news after days of breaking down site by site by National Public Radio and the head of engineering at Master-McNeil inc. The websites that lead to Denverguardian.net were NationalReport.net, USAToday.com.co, WashingtonPost.com.co and lastly a rented server from Amazon Web Services. The owner, Jestin Coler was approached at his California home, where he claimed to have no idea what they were talking about. Later on that day, National Public Radio received an email from Coler to set up an interview. In the interview, Jestin began to give reasons to why he creates fake news including reasons like how easy it is to spread news, how intriguing it is that people believe it, and how much money he makes from the ads on his fake articles. Coler says that he has been talking to his wife about getting out of the industry but admits that there are hundreds of people who are waiting to take his place for the money. Some fakes news that Jestin Coler is responsible for are Colorado allows for marijuana purchases with food stamps and the very popular with 1.6 million views in 10 days. the FBI agent who leaked Clinton’s emails was killed. "The whole idea from the start was to build a site that could kind of infiltrate the echo chambers of the alt-right, publish blatantly or fictional stories and then be able to publicly denounce those stories and point out the fact that they were fiction," Coler says.
