Nearly 2000 Child Separations at the Mexico Border

Detained immigrant children line up in the cafeteria at the Karnes County Residential Center, a temporary home for immigrant women and children detained at the border, Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2014, in Karnes City, Texas. Federal authorities want to build a similar immigration lockup facility for families in Dilley, Texas, south of San Antonio amid an unprecedented surge in the number of youngsters pouring across the U.S. border, a federal official said Thursday.

Almost 2000 children have been separated from their parents and guardians at the U.S.-Mexican border between April 19 and May 31 according to the U.S. government. MSN News reported that “U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a ‘zero tolerance’ policy in which all apprehended entering the United States illegally would be criminally charged.” As a result of the strict enforcement of this policy, children have been separated from their families as their guardians are criminally prosecuted. A spokesman stated “Advocates want us to ignore the law and give people with families a free pass. We no longer exempt entire classes of people.”
